SISTERS IN HISTORY ROUTE DETAILS
The V & T Railroad’s new long-line runs travel through time on 12 miles of new track between Carson City and Virginia City, the first two-thirds of the planned 19-mile reconstruction project. Passengers in Carson City depart for the 1.5-hour scenic ride at the newly constructed Eastgate interim station, located on the east side of town near the Lyon County-Carson City line.
Starting just above the Carson River Canyon, the steam train takes a modern route for about two miles along the east side of Moundhouse and across a spectacular railroad bridge over U.S. Hwy. 50. Just north of the bridge, the track begins to follow the historic, Comstock era route, through the Flowery Mountains to Virginia City. On the way, passengers may see exposed silver ore veins and wild mustangs, along with these points of interest:
- Tunnel No. 2 – 566 feet long.
- American Flat – site of a gold and silver mining town that lobbied to become the state capital during the Comstock era, but disappeared when the ore did.
- Overman Pit Embankment – 300,000 cubic yards of fill rising 120 feet above the east side of the mining pit.
- Comstock mines and mills – a more efficient way to transport the silver and gold from the mother lode to the mills was the original idea behind the V & T Railroad.
- Gold Hill Station – completed in September 1869 (restored in the 1990s), the depot is located on a sharp curve of the line, at one of the few flat places in town.
- Tunnel No. 4 – the last tunnel before Virginia City and one of five tunnels originally built for the train to descend the 1,600 feet to the valley floor.
- F Street Depot Car – the end of the line in Virginia City (and the beginning for the short-line trips to Gold Hill and back), with a free shuttle available to downtown C Street. You’ll have three hours to enjoy the many tours and attractions.
