Sisters in History Route Highlights
Ride the almost-complete, multi-million-dollar reconstruction of the V&T’s original Carson City-Virginia City track. Starting just above the Carson River Canyon, the train takes a modern route first, for about two miles, along the east side of Mound House and across a spectacular railroad bridge over U.S. Hwy. 50.

Just north of the bridge, the track begins to follow the historic, Comstock era route. Watch for mines, silver ore veins, maybe even wild mustangs, along with:

• Tunnel No. 2 – 566 feet long.
• American Flat – site of a gold and silver mining town that lobbied to become the state capital during the Comstock era, but disappeared when the ore did.
• Overman Pit Embankment – 300,000 cubic yards of fill rising 120 feet above the east side of the mining pit.
• Scales/water stop – at the V&T’s operational peak, 260,000 tons of ore were weighed here in one year (1876) and 40 trains a day picked up water.
• Gold Hill Station – completed in September 1869 (restored in the 1990s), the depot is located on a sharp curve of the line, at one of the few flat places in town.
• Tunnel No. 4 – the last tunnel before Virginia City, one of five originally built for the 1600-ft. descent to the valley floor.
• F Street Depot Car – the end of the line in Virginia City (and the beginning for the Historic Route trips to Gold Hill and back), with a free shuttle available to downtown C Street. You’ll have three hours to enjoy the many tours and attractions.
