When it comes to treating Mom on Mother’s Day you can take her to brunch, lunch or dinner, but why not surprise her with something completely different: tickets aboard the V&T Railroad.
Bring the entire family and climb aboard the V&T on Sunday, May 13, 2012 for a train ride of a lifetime designed especially for Mom. This special edition diesel ride from Carson City to Virginia City comes with spectacular scenery, Wild West history and plenty of shopping and dining opportunities in Virginia City. Mom is even honored on the train with a long-stem rose.
Once aboard, the V&T iron horse will roll through 16 miles of train track re-opened in August 2009 after 70 years of non-operation. All train rides includes scenic vistas of the Carson River and majestic Sierra Nevada, passing through two tunnels, by abandoned mine shafts, old cemeteries and even offering occasional sightings of wild mustangs. The historic train travels the same silver route paved by the miners of the infamous 1860s Comstock silver boom.
The V&T offers an exclusive one-of-a-kind Mother’s Day special.
The Mother’s Day train departs the Carson City Depot, 4650 Eastgate Siding Road, at 10 a.m. sharp. Book in advance because this popular train ride does sell out. The cost is $35 for adults, $20 for children 16 and under and $31 for veterans and senior citizens, 65 years and up. Gift Certificates are now available by calling the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau (775)687-7410 or 800-NEVADA-1.
Another great factor about the Mother’s Day train is that it also provides train enthusiasts a sneak peek into the 2012 V&T season. Opening weekend RailFest activities begin Memorial Day weekend, May 26-28 and will highlight steam and diesel engines with round trip and one-way rides from Carson City to Virginia City. There are plenty of Wild West festivities all weekend long at the event. V&T trains will run weekly, Saturday – Sunday through October 21.
Will you hop on the V&T for Mother’s Day?

Music, theater, dance and all things creative, the Brewery Arts Center is Carson City’s hub of all forms of art and continues to blaze a trail into the hearts and minds of the capital city.
In Carson City’s historic district, the BAC and the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall hosts more than 100 events annually in multiple venues, including theater productions, concerts, art classes, children’s programs, recitals and receptions.
Its history is quite a story. The BAC is located in the old Carson Brewing Company building, Nevada’s longest-operating brewery. To capitalize on the Comstock rush between Carson City and Virginia City, the brewery was built in 1865 by John Wagner. The brewery and a bar were on the main floor and the upper floor served as the Masonic Lodge from 1865 to 1919, according to the National Park Service. The Carson Brewery made steam beer using water from nearby Kings Canyon Creek, with the hops and barley imported from California. The brewery delivered barrels, kegs and bottles of beer to local saloons, Comstock tap rooms and other towns around the state. In addition, five kegs a week were shipped to San Francisco for some Nevada-based customers who would drink no other brand.
The brewery changed hands in 1900 and again in 1910, when the brew-master converted from steam beer to lager. In 1913 the product was labeled Tahoe Beer, “Famous as the Lake.” The brew-master, Fritz Hagmeyer and owner Max Stenz, expanded the operation, by bottling soft drinks and mineral water from Carson Hot Springs.

By the 1940s, large brewing companies were buying local beer businesses throughout the country. Arnold Millard bought the brewery in 1926 from his father-in-law Stenz and later liquidated the business in 1948. The building was then the home of the Nevada Appeal newspaper until 1975 when it became the site of the Brewery Arts Center. The BAC still features an exhibit on the history of the Carson Brewing Company.
With an annual budget just under $1 million, the BAC operates Access Carson City Charter Cable Channels 10 and 26, The BAC’s Performing Arts Cooperative (BAC PAC), the BAC Stage Kids, the Brewery Arts Center Summer Stock Theater, Concerts at the Brewery, Classes at the Brewery, the Artisans’ Cafe and the Nevada Artist Association (NAA).
The NAA is a showcase for Silver State visitors and artists with a gallery showcasing sculptures, photography, paintings, jewelry and crafts. The Artisan Cafe, in the BAC, serves coffee and breakfast pastries as well as lunch. Tickets to upcoming events, classes and concert information are available at the cafe.
The Brewery Arts Center located at 449 W. King Street is the place to go for all things creative.
Upcoming featured events at the BAC include:
— Wine, Art and Music at the Brewery on March 3 from noon to 5 p.m. which coincides with the Carson City Wine Walk.
— A pre-St. Patrick’s Day performance by Men of Worth, on Friday, March 16 at 8 p.m.
— Reno Baroque Ensemble — Vox Nevada on Saturday. March 17 at 2 p.m. The choral will present a cappella masterworks from the Renaissance period.
— Performances of “Forever Plaid” By Wild Horse Productions. The flash-back to the 1950’s and the memorable music of that era will be presented on Friday and Saturday, March 30, 31, April 6, 7, 13 & 14 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.

I have been a patron of the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company (WNC) for many years. Some of my favorite shows that I have seen performed by WNC are Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Sound of Music, and White Christmas. Although these previous musicals were amazing, they pale in comparison to WNC production of Phantom of the Opera.
WNC’s production of Phantom of the Opera was simply magical. The vocals of the lead actors were of such high quality, it was easy to imagine that I was seeing Phantom on Broadway instead of inside the Carson Community Center. The special effects were outstanding; my favorite involved the famed chandelier rising from the stage to the ceiling at the beginning of ACT I, and then crashing back to the stage seconds before the intermission. The scenery and sets were so incredibly intricate and well designed, especially the staging of the Phantom’s lair in the sewers below Paris. It was truly believed that the Phantom was paddling Christine through the canals and sewers in a small boat. WNC’s production of Phantom of the Opera was so well performed that I dreaded the final moments, when the house lights came up, and the musical was over.
Since the WNC’s production of Phantom of the Opera was so enjoyable, I decided to purchase season tickets for next year’s productions. Although Phantom of the Opera will, for now, be regarded as my favorite WNC production, I look forward to a year full of great songs, amazing choreography, and exceptional special effects.

Legendary R&B singer Marvin Gaye said it. So did retired Nevada boxing official and twice elected Washoe County Judge Mills Lane.
With Nevada Day finally here, it’s time to shout: Let’sGet it On.
Beginning this weekend, the Silver State celebrates and toasts its admission to the Union. The Nevada party first got its start in 1864 and has been chugging along for 147 years. While everything that goes on in Las Vegas, is supposed to stay in Las Vegas, as the saying goes, Nevadans want everyone to know that whatever goes on in Carson City during the weekend celebration, will probably wind up on video tape.
Beer poured by the kegs, chili served by the buckets and enough sausage and hamburgers to feed hungry cowboys and cowgirls from Laughlin to Gerlach, Nevada Day weekend promises to dish out plenty of Wild West revelry.
With diversity that runs north to south and all places in between, where cowboys and miners mix it up with card sharks and climbers, the Nevada statehood four-day celebration is like no other. Nevadans turn their attention to Carson City each October to celebrate life in the Silver State, with a parade that runs three hours long and stretches four miles. Eclectic activities highlight Nevada’s character and those who have brought the state to larger-than-life proportions.
Pulling out all the stops, Nevada Day organizers make sure there’s plenty to do during before, during and after the parade, including free music and arts shows, a carnival packed with thrill-seeking rides, a flap-jack pancake breakfast, walk, trot and running events, a World Championship Rock Drilling Contest, a must-see beard and whisker contest and a chili feed that would make even the most staid politician sweat. Here’s the game plan:

Friday
- RSVP Carnival will provide carnival rides for adults and children at Mills Park in Carson City. The RSVP Carnival will open
at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and noon to midnight on Oct. 29 – Oct. 30.
Saturday
- The 73rd Annual Nevada Day Parade features magnificent floats, high-stepping equestrian units, and spirited marching bands from throughout the state on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The traditional 10 a.m. flyover of F-18 Hornets, F-16 Falcon, from the Fallon Naval Air Station and C-130 Hercules from the Nevada Air Guard will kick-off the
parade.
- 22st Annual Carson Nugget Nevada Day Classic Run/Walk will feature hundreds of runners and walkers in Carson City’s historical downtown district. The event includes an 8K run, two-mile walk and two-mile fun run.
- Got whiskers? Check out the annual Nevada Day Beard Contest at the Capital Amphitheater immediately following the parade. Winners awarded in the following categories: longest; fullest; reddest; whitest; blackest; best salt and pepper; best groomed; scruffiest; and most bearded community – which has been a Virginia City claim to fame the past six years.
- What’s a Silver State celebration without a mining and drilling competition? The 34th Annual World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest will be at the Carson Nugget parking lot. Contestants competing for a $2,000 grand prize have 10 minutes to drill holes in Sierra White Granite using pound hammers and bits of graduated steel.
- An Old West flap-jack breakfast hosted by the Carson City Republican Women’s Club at the Governor’s Mansion. Chew the fat with those who dare say they’re politicians and those who aren’t. Proceeds benefit scholarships to Carson High School and Dayton High School students.
- RE/MAX Realty affiliates will host with the Nevada Day Balloon Launch on Carson. Starting with a mass launch, Team RE/MAX will fly its signature hot air balloon along with 15-20 other hot air balloons, to help commemorate the day in 1864 when Nevada became the 36th state in the union.
- Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki will host the 29th Annual Chili Feed at the Carson Nugget’s Banquet Center. This event is an
opportunity to meet and mingle with state and local leaders.
- From turn of the century to present day, Nevada has a rich pugilist history. The Annual Silver State Rumble features live
amateur boxing hosted by Bruno’s Boxing Club.
- The Nevada State Railroad Museum is commemorating the last run of its historic McKeen Motor Car, No. 22 on the V&T line, Nevada Day, 1945. This transport will take any rider back to the days where rails ruled and the squeaky wheels were those made of steel and iron that turned on the miles of track. The historic car resembles a yacht on tracks with round porthole windows for viewing, mahogany interior and rich elegant exterior.
Sunday
- The Capital City Community Band will open its 33rd concert season with a free “old-fashioned band concert” at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.
